Students score higher in countries like South Korea though because they are forced to study all the time on their own to the point where they suffer in mental health..

It is teacher turn over, the states and schools put sanctions basically on the teachers that don't teach a certain way, usually the best teachers, not only are the best teachers leaving/aging, the worst are staying that decide to teach the drool worthy curriculum.

Why dont we start importing foreign teachers from countries with great schools and pay them higher salaries. We need better teachers not better paid teachers. If you want to see how bad our teachers are look at the PISA results for the past 10 yearsp

Yeah, of course we spend more per student with no results. In addition to metal detectors and other wonderful sights to see, we spend $20 billion every year teaching our kids the useless and nonsensical US customary units in addition to the metric system rather than spending on teacher salaries and such. And btw: 1:08 OECD = Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development 3:04 The UK's ISO 3166 alpha-3 code is GBR 3:25 By "Korea", you mean "South Korea"

9 1/2 hours a day?! I was working 12 hours a day including weekends when I worked in Las Vegas, northern Alaska, and northern Arizona! I got so tired I moved to Italy. So now I work 35 hours a week, I get full healthcare benefits plus a pension, and I get to live in the most horrible, obviously I’m being sarcastic, country in the world! Italy! Again here comes some sarcasm, oh and the food is horrible here! Not to mention how rude and sad all the people are. Jk! I absolutely adore Italy! And boy are these kids smart! They speak to languages! Isn’t that weird?!

One word: Demographics Bring all the Blacks in Detroit and Chicago into Japan or Finland and watch a similar progression of increased behavioral outbursts and poor learning environments transform the teaching profession into glorified disciplinarians. Also of interest: The achievement gap vanishes between the US and Europe if only US whites are taken into consideration. So if you're a white student in an mostly white school, you're likely receiving education comparable to most of Europe (up until the migrant crisis anyway). Most east-Asians still outperform whites in Europe and the US. The reason for this is also likely demographics.

Overworks??? They get holidays off not just days but a week and 2-3 for Christmas 2-3 months for summer On top of days they are sick or for personal reasons No actual boss to really breathe down your neck for deadlines. You’re dealing with kids not adults I think teachers get paid too much if you ask me. You come out with a bachelors and automatically make 50k+ ????

A big part of it is disciplinary issues in young people, I graduate from highschool in the spring and my mom teaches middle school. Everyday there are kids in both levels of education getting away with pretty much whatever they want. Skipping school, disrespecting teachers, violating general codes of conduct, and more. As a student it's quite enjoyable as the general classroom culture almost entirely serves the interest of the student. Any attempts to discipline going against general guidelines results in both disdain from students and uproar from the student's parents. The schools have barely any power when it comes to actually getting their students to behave appropriately. The individual teacher can't do anything on their own and the districts usually don't back them up or their attempts to change a students behaviour. I am a teacher's assistant in two periods, one is a freshmen level theater course, and the other is an AP World history class for sophomores. The freshmen are generally well behaved but there is this one student who acts aggressively towards his peers, the teacher, and anyone who gets in his way. He intimidates and manipulates the class to do what he wants and the teacher will rarely act against him for fear of repurcussions against himself from the district and parents. My mom has told my sister and me for years that being a teacher in America is by far one of the worst jobs and no one should ever pursue it even if they are a great teacher. There is no support structure against the actions of students and any independent action could cost them their job and credibility. I'm glad there's a shortage, hopefully people will notice that nobody wants to teach kids that have free reign over all their actions and can choose what they will and won't do

We have the same thing here in the U.K. Teachers are abused, not paid enough, have to put in hours of extra work every day. It is so bad that the government are now opening ‘academies’ which are basically schools but with ‘teachers’ that don’t have teaching qualifications.
